Hey everybody, I'm not quite sure where to put these, but i thought I might put together some journals documenting the creative processes of me and my motley band of musicians. For those of you that don't know, I'm in an Alternative Rock band called "Assault on Reality" and to be fair we're pretty good, although like any beginning group we need some work. For your benefit, i'll provide you with the line-up so you can see who does what and who I'm talking about:
Danni - Vocals Sam - Guitar Ryan - Guitar/Backing Vocals Craig - Bass Nick (me) - Drums
I'll try to update these as much as I can, might interest a few people. And we recently went through an overhaul where we changed our name and music style, so a Myspace will surface as soon as we've got some songs done.

ENTRY 1
Ok, so as the lyricist of the band I'm presented with a bit of a challenge. I'm charged with coming up with lyrics, and working out the vocal melodies (basically, how the lyrics should be sung) for every song, unless it's an instrumental for obvious reasons. This, coupled with the fact that I write all the drums makes my workload quite a bit heightened.
Last Friday; Sam, Ryan and myself got together at Ryan's house to hang out, drink and play Playstation however somehow it turned into an impromptu jam session. On acoustic guitars (well, one...Ryan just played his electric cleanly) we devised riffs and a basic song structure, while I wrote lyrics and worked out the melodies. Under the working title "Why Should I Even Care", this actually marks our first real completed song. We played the whole thing through about four times before I was struck by a sudden desire to make it heavier. So, on the repetition of the last chorus, we added pounding electric guitars and I will at some stage add drums. I'm excited to complete some sort of final mix of this song, and when and if we begin recording I will take great pride in hearing this completed.

ENTRY 2
So we had another practice yesterday, but for the first time without Sam...and the first time for Danni since she joined the band. We basically finished up the music side of things in terms of the song we wrote at Ryan's as documented in the last journal. We also wrote a brand new one that's so metal it's not funny. Although it's probably not that metal now that I think about it, more Alternative Rock.
I found out how much it sucks drumming in hot weather, and my t-shirt was drenched at the end of practice. However it was all worth, and I didn't let a superficial thing like that stop me; after all, I am the hardcore drummer of Assault on Reality.

OK fairly bad news, Ryan has decided it's not the best time for us to have a band and has more or less quit. I'm not giving up on this, but at the moment things are looking pretty bad for Assault on Reality. I'll give you updates as they come but for now it's a temporary hiatus.

no point having a band if there is no commitment or sign of it. Keep on trying I guess.

I somehow overlooked this thread and haven't noticed it 'til now...so I guess I'll just revive it...
Being in a band seems like it'd be really cool. It's something I've always thought about, but I just can't play any instrument for my life. I'm sure I could get good if I put my mind to it and practiced a lot, but it's just never been something I think I'd be really dedicated to.
But anyway, I still want to hear some of you guys' stuff...that is, if you're still at it after nearly 3 months.

Practice makes perfect...or as close to perfect as humans can be. It's been a while yes, but there have been some developments and I think our band is far from dead, I'll keep you updated.

Ok, I'm proud to say that my band is back and on track with a reformed line-up. I'll post that here so you know who I'm talking about:
Sam - vocals Ryan - guitar Alex- guitar Steve - bass Nick (me) - drums
We've actually had two practices since the new line-up came into effect, but I didn't make an entry because I forgot. But as I write this, we've just had a very successful practice with only three of us, Steve, Ryan and myself...but that's all you really need to write songs anyway. We've got one good song that we're happy with, and more to come no doubt so stay tuned.
