The spell we cast was just supposed to help us get through our performance at the Riff, make us better musicians; just for a bit of fun of course, none of us believed it was real. But everything went horribly wrong when Jeremy decided to incorporate his own little rhyme into the incantation…
We were sitting in the attic in a perfect square, meditating on the spell we were about to perform. All of us were in our own little worlds; silent, but laughing to ourselves about how ridiculous it was that everyone could act so seriously about a make believe spell that we had found on the net. The flames of the lit circle of candles around us flickered, casting an eerie glow upon the slanted walls of the attic. We were ready.
We all stood up in our square and began the invocation of the guardians. Damien spoke from the north corner; "Guardian of the north; of earth, rock and endurance hear us…" it was then my turn to add to the power of the band…
"Guardian of the east; of water and purity hear us…", then Jeremy had his turn…
"Guardian of the south; of fire and strength hear us…" Alice then said her piece…
"Guardian of the west; of air and wisdom hear us…" the spell was at its full power, we could feel an incredible energy surging through us. It was almost complete. Dane then finished the incantation, asking the guardians to grant us our one wish…
"Great guardians of the world…", he began, "we invoke thee, please grant us the power to play better then any other bands at the riff, grant us the power to play well, be good musicians and become famous throughout the world!", he said with a final burst of enthusiasm.
Then all of a sudden, the room began to overflow with a bright white light and a feeling of immense coolness started to circulate through the air. The spell was actually working! A spell that we found on the internet, that we thought would just be a bit of fun was actually working. The light began to fade, the spell was complete.
"I don't feel any different…" said Jeremy sounding disappointed, "let's give it another go, just in case." So just for Jeremy we invoked the guardians one last time. Unfortunately this time Jeremy decided to add his own verse to the incantation. His part went like this, "Hey guardians, this didn’t work last time, so hopefully it will at the end of this rhyme.
You're hopeless at what you do, acting all up yourselves and noble,
You probably can't even draw or write or spell,
So why do you waste people's precious time, making them worship you?
I think you should get over yourselves and live like mortals do"
At the moment Jeremy finished, the door slammed shut and locked itself. The candles flickered and died, the windows closed and were locked and Damien, Alice, Jeremy and I were enveloped in an inescapable darkness. We became scared and angry, we yelled at Jeremy, screamed at him, what else could we do? What else could go wrong? Then we lapsed into an awkward, eerie silence. It was pitch black and we were trapped in an attic until someone came home and found us.
All of a sudden from out of the darkness came an ear piercing scream, I blocked my ears to try and block out the horrifying noise. Then suddenly it stopped, oblivious of everyone else in the room I felt all alone and afraid in the darkness, I felt myself being tugged away from the room. Suddenly out of nowhere I heard a screaming and then images began to flash before my eyes. All of my worst nightmares were being displayed right in front of me and then all around me. The screams grew louder and louder, then stopped abruptly. I began to sweat and panic, terrified of what might happen next. All around me was an inescapable silence, darkness that before then I had never imagined possible. I stood up and looked around, I couldn't see a thing. I tried to feel my way to the wall, but it never came I couldn’t see or feel anything except an other worldly presence that sent a shiver down my spine and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
I was beginning to give up hope of ever getting out of the attic and seeing daylight again when from out of the darkness came a very grave voice. But it wasn't the tone of the voice that scared and shocked me, it was what it said that really made me tremble. "Mortal, your friend insults us and mocks us with his words and we will not accept this behavior. Your wish was that of a fair cause despite its selfishness and we were willing to grant you some power. But your friend I am afraid was not so wise. You and the other two spoke with respect, yet your friend did not grant us this courtesy. We guardians do not like to be made a mockery of, yet we do not wish to punish those who did nothing wrong. So we offer you a choice, do for us one simple favor, or be lost in the circuits of time and space forever, and all eternity."
I was now terrified beyond any doubt. Could this be a trick? Or was this truly an act of kindness? "Great guardian…ah, guardians, what is this task that you ask of me? I wish to know before I make my decision."
"That I cannot say, for your choice will help us to decide whether you are loyal and trust us or whether you are like your friend and do not believe in us and have confidence enough to trust our judgment, for our judgment is that which your friend truly deserves." boomed the voice from all directions.
"Then guardians I shall do for you this one task, for I would trust you with my life." I said, tripping over my words in the effort to stay calm and respectful.
"Then so be it, take this blade and we will send you back through time to deliver Jeremy his punishment."
"Hey, if you knew his name before why didn’t you use it instead of referring to him as 'your friend' all the time?" I said feeling confused and overwhelmed with it all.
"Well....because.....it sounds more other worldly if I say it like that. Hey wait a minute, a mortal such as you should learn to respect her gods more, or they might be in for a rude awakening. Speaking of which lets get back to business, when you are back in time you are to take that blade and plunge it into Jeremy's chest, in so doing this he will be sent to us and he will receive his punishment."
"But lord, won't that kill him?" I said feeling enraged at the idea of stabbing a friend in the back.
"Well yes, but you have already agreed to do it."
"How is that fair and just?"
"Shutup! Your choice has already sealed your friend's fate."
"Stop calling him my friend, his name is Jere…"
"Enough talking, I shall send you back and you shall complete this task."
"Trust a god to always want the last word…"
Then I was back in the attic with the blade in my hand. Everyone was meditating, including Jeremy. Shaking and telling myself it was just a dream I moved over to him. With one swift movement it was over, I had slain one of my best friends and one of the best guitarists I had ever known. Then everything began to spin, vanishing before my eyes. I was once again enveloped in an inescapable darkness. The voice came to me again. "Jodie, you have done well by completing this task and have shown that you trust our judgment. So we shall grant you and your friends a second chance. You shall once again be sent back in time to before you first spoke to us, and prevent your friend from singing his song. However if you should fail in this mission what your friend shall receive the same fate once again and you shall once again be the one to deliver it to him."
So once more I experienced the feeling of time travel, and it is nothing like people believe, it feels hollow and much like your head is being sucked off by a very cruel plant. Anyway, back to the story….
I opened my eyes and found myself once again to be within the attic of my house. Everyone was meditating again, for the third time. Alice came up to me as she had before, "Come on Jo, we're ready." She always calls me that because she knows how much I hate it.
"Guys I don't feel too well, and I don't think we should do this anymore either, it was a dumb idea anyway." I said trying to prevent the sequence of events from going the way they had before.
"Oh gee Jodie, thanks a lot." said Damien sarcastically. This had been his idea in the first place.
"Sorry, but I just don't want to do it anymore. How about we go to the movies? I'll buy the popcorn." I asked, hoping that my friends liked food enough to accept my bribe. And if they didn't then I would think that there was something wrong because my friends and I are always pigging out while we watch movies.
"Well when you put it that way….it better be butter popcorn or there's no deal!" said Damien, looking slightly concerned that I actually was sick.
"Deal!" I said smiling. How could I refuse when it was my quickest way out of the attic......besides that’s the way I like it.
