There was once a swamp that was avoided at all costs, unless absolutely necessary. The reason being that there were several rumors of it being a haunted place. Some of the brave, few as they were, even disappeared completely after going into said swamp. Another rumor was that there was a monster hidden within the swamp, and that it killed any who entered its home. It was safe to say that this kept many far away.
A man happened to live near this swamp, since he did not believe the rumors. He had no job, no friends, and he almost never went to the nearby town. Very few people ever visited him, and even they rarely saw him. The man was never lonely though, because he had his beagles to keep him company. And everyone knows that dogs make very good companions.
Everything had been normal that day, at least until he noticed that two of his precious beagles were missing. He wasn’t too worried though, especially since the rest of the beagles seemed perfectly fine. So the man put his dogs into their pens and went searching for his lost pets. He searched the house, his whole property, and even the nearby town, but there was no sign of his lost pets. The only place he had not searched was the swamp, which is what he did. The man, who we will now call Hugh, was forced to return home empty handed when the sun began to set.
Hugh had given up searching for his dogs after a week, which is when two more of his beagles disappeared. He searched for them just as he had with the first two, but gave up with the same results as before. This continued for three more weeks, until he locked his last two pets in the house with him. Hugh’s plan worked for about a month before something happened. The yelping is what woke him up so late that night. By the time he had rushed to where his dogs had been sleeping they were already gone. He could still hear them somewhere outside, though the noise was getting fainter fast. Hugh rushed out after them, but not before grabbing his trusty knife.
It seemed like hours had passed before he realized he could no longer hear anything. Where was he anyway? Hugh looked around wildly, becoming more frantic as his situation sunk in. A rustle from somewhere nearby caused him to yelp out in fear and spun around, looking for the source. When he turned around again there was a pair of red eyes directly in front of him. The face was too close for him to see anything more than those eyes… And were they glowing? The knife fell from his fingers, and Hugh knew only darkness.
No one noticed that Hugh had disappeared until almost a year later. They did try to search for him, but soon gave up when their only option left was the swamp. None of the people dared go in there, and it wasn’t as if they knew him well enough to even think of trying. They didn’t consider themselves heartless though, and they had tried looking for him… This is the thought most of them had as they slowly started to forget about Hugh.
Several years later there was a ferry that went through the swamp. Neither the ferry or its passengers ever came out of the swamp though. There was a large search that went on for over five months before people started to quit searching. Even police were forced to give up after a year of searching with no clues to be found. They never did notice the red eyes that silently laughed at them as they quietly left for the last time…
End.
Soooo~! This is a story I heard a looooong time ago. It was kinda changed, since I don't remember it very well. T-T Sounds much better with a fire, a dark forest, and a good storyteller...
