With the start of '09, there's a lot of upcoming games that look very promising. Most of the ones that got my attention are on the next gen systems, i.e. PS3. The following are what I'm looking forward to the most:
Prototype
If you've ever played any type of sandbox game, i.e. all Grand Theft Auto's, Spider-Man 2 & 3, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, etc. this is pretty much all those games combined on steroids. You take the role of a super mutant by the name of Alex Mercer who has lost his memory and is seeking out the answers to who and what he is. He possesses an interesting array of supernatural abilities, including super strength, agility, shapeshifting, and taking the memories, abilities and appearance of any person he kills and consumes. It's one of those super gory types of games, which are my favorites, and the free-roaming parkour-style gameplay looks very fun.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
We all know about the curse that seems to be brought upon every movie licensed game that comes out, but this one actually looks like it might be good. I recently got a chance to watch the leaked, incomplete, albeit still awesome movie of the same name, and it sparked my interest so I looked up some gameplay vids of it, and it looks amazing. Graphics are out of this world, and there's actually decapitations this time around! Fans have been waiting like, what, forever for a brutal Wolverine game where you can actually put those claws of his to good use. The movie was very good and entertaining, and the game looks to follow in it's footsteps.
Heavy Rain
A lot of people probably aren't too familiar with a game called Indigo Prophecy, or Fahrenheit in some places, which came out a while back. I ran across it a few years ago and it was definitely a unique gameplay experience. It's kind of like an interactive movie, but you have more control over how the story plays out by the decisions your character makes. Although it was somewhat revolutionary, it still had quite a bit of faults that kept it from being great. The choices were very limited and players often felt constricted to the areas and main storyline, and the story also became a bit too far fetched near the end. But now, Quantic Dream, the same creators of that game, are taking another shot with their upcoming title "Heavy Rain", promising more free-willed gameplay, a more believable and original plot, and several characters to play with in countless dramatic, realistic scenarios like it's predecessor.
God of War III
Taking place in Ancient Greece folklore, the God of War series puts you in the role of Kratos, a man who has been given godly powers by the gods themselves, in exchange for his service to them. Throughout this popular franchise, the character has been put through countless tests, been betrayed, killed, etc. but he just keeps coming back for revenge. And now, in the third chapter, he finds himself at the Gates of Olympus, prepared to take on all the gods. Definitely an exhilarating, exciting, and intense action game almost any gamer is bound to like. The story has captured me so far, I can't wait to see how it continues.
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Batman games have come and gone, been good and bad, like most comic-based superhero adaptations, but this one looks to be the most promising and faithful of all to the Dark Knight. Placing you in the confines of Arkham Asylum, home to all the psychos and nutcases Bats has helped lock up all these years, you're given the Dark Knight's entire arsenal of gadgets, using your wits and skillful tactics to make your way through this hellhole. Not a big fan of stealth games, but come on, it's Batman. Yeah, I've got that little bit of nerd in me. But it looks like you might actually be able to just fight your way through however you want.
Well, that's my list. Might add more later, if anything else catches my attention. Feel free to post your own, or just plain out discuss.
