Yes indeed, the books that are taking people(mostly teenage girls, I've found) by storm. It seems Stephanie Meyer now has a monster on her hands, how will anything she ever subsequently writes become as popular as Twilight? It won't, no matter how well-written it is.
However, I am a guy. And yes, I have read the first book of the Twilight series and enjoyed it immensely. Yes, I shall be going out and reading the other books in the series. BUT, I sure am glad I didn't buy into it? Why? I'll tell you...
Many people have compared Stephanie Meyer to J.K. Rowling, and it's a fair comparison to make. Both of them share a similar target audience, both of them are fantasy writers, and both of them have a 'rags to riches' success story behind them. But there is one thing that sets these writers apart from one another, and trust me, it's a wide-ass gap too. The fact is that, J.K. Rowling has a gift for description, creating characters we just fall in love with, and devising a world that is more akin to Middle Earth than our own world (basically, it rocks) And Stephanie Meyer seems to be a bit drab and uninteresting.
Before everybody starts throwing things at me, I will answer the question that I'm sure is on everybody's mind. And that is: 'How could you like the Twilight series if you think it's drab and uninteresting?' Simply put. Stephanie Meyers created some terrific characters, but her descriptions leave a lot to the imagination. Nearly the whole way through the book, I was constantly asking myself how I would do certain descriptions or play out certain scenes better, and told myself that so many things in the book were flawed. While I like the book, it is by no means the best thing I've ever read. And by the way it was hyped, that's the impression I had before reading it...
So, feel free to break me down, but that's how I feel...
